Prom Photos On My Birthday

One of the nice things about working for yourself is that you can pretty much guarantee that you never have to work on your birthday. Sure, there might be extenuating circumstances that force you to, but for the most part it’s not very likely you’ll be scheduling work that day. This is one of those rare times where I did schedule work on my birthday. That, in and of itself, should tell you how special these folks are.

This was the first time in my many years of portraiture that I’ve been asked to shoot prom photos. I’ve taken photos AT proms, both event style and portrait, but never pre-prom photos.

It was also the first time I loaded up my new car for a shoot and let me tell you, it was an absolute dream being able to pack all my gear in the boot without having to move the boys’ car seats.

I met this cute little couple and their families out in Gustine and followed them to a friend’s house with the most picture perfect yard around. It seriously looks like a park only nicer. The one trouble we had was that the photos had to be done a lot earlier than is ideal and that canopy of trees wasn’t helping with the color of the light falling on my subjects. But that’s why I bring a softbox everywhere and shoot with my own light, letting Mother Nature light my background while I drop beautiful light onto my subjects.

All in all, it wasn’t a bad way to spend a portion of my birthday. I spent it with some great people, made some beautiful images, and brought a little laughter and good memories into their lives.

Given all the smiles these two offered up during the shoot, I'm pretty sure they had a great time at prom.
