2025-0123 Soccer Girls Varsity | Waterford vs Stone Ridge
Many moons ago, I assisted my father when he coached the Manteca High girls soccer team. I think I might have been a junior or senior in high school that first season and mostly helped run drills. That first season was a rough one. With the team still in its infancy, they’d never had much more than a parent supervisor filling in. Then, overnight, in stepped the science teacher doing his student teaching, Mr. Noceti, and they went from practices filled with fun scrimmages, to non-stop drills and the set in stone rule of “you never do anything without a ball at your feet.” There were a lot of losses that first season, as well as grumbling and tears. Fewer the year after. By year three MHS sat atop the league, and would end up bringing home more than one championship before the old man moved on. I see a lot of that year one team in the struggles the girls face out on the pitch. But I speak from experience when I say that it can and will get better. Keep your heads held high.
